The Sundowner

In Kenya, they have a better name for happy hour.

They call it sundowners.

During a vacation on the beaches of Watamu, overlooking the Indian Ocean, we stayed at a place called Jabali House. Beautiful beaches, turquoise water, and the kind of evenings that make you seriously reconsider your return flight.

That's also where I discovered the Dawa.

A Kenyan cocktail made with vodka, honey, lime, and ice. Dawa means medicine in Swahili.

Which strikes me as a considerably more enjoyable prescription than anything I've ever picked up at a pharmacy.

The evening routine was simple. Find somewhere to sit, order a Dawa, watch the sun go down, and repeat as necessary.

Years later, I found myself looking at a golden, sand-textured watch dial and thinking about those evenings.

Naturally, I decided to build a watch.

Some watches are designed to help you keep track of time.

This one was inspired by the moments when I couldn't care less what time it was.

The best medicine is a little time away.
