green textured watch dial with gold indicies to be assembled on desk

What Does “1 of 1” Mean at JMR Watches?

If you spend enough time looking around JMR Watches, you’ll probably notice that not every watch is sold the same way.

Some are Available Now.

Some are Built to Order.

And every once in a while, you’ll see one marked 1 of 1.

That last one means exactly what it sounds like.

I made one.

And I’m probably not making another.

Why Make Just One?

JMR isn’t a traditional watch company with thousands of identical watches sitting on shelves.

Most of these watches start with an idea.

Sometimes it’s a color combination I want to try. Sometimes I find a dial, case, bezel, or set of hands that looks too good together not to build. Sometimes I just want to see if an idea that exists in my head actually works on a wrist.

That means there are watches I can recreate pretty easily.

And there are others where everything just happened to come together once.

Those are the 1 of 1s.

Part of the Fun Is Not Knowing What’s Next

I’ve realized one of my favorite parts of building JMR is that I don’t necessarily want every watch to become a permanent model.

There’s something fun about making a watch because I like it, putting it out into the world, and letting one person own that exact version.

No production run.

No restock scheduled six months from now.

No “2027 re-release.”

When it’s gone, it’s gone.

Available Now vs. Built to Order vs. 1 of 1

Here’s the easiest way to think about the three categories:

Available Now
The watch is already built, tested, and ready for a wrist.

Built to Order
I’ve built the watch before and can source the parts to make another one. It may take a few weeks, but another can be made.

1 of 1
This exact watch is the only one I plan to make.

Could I change my mind someday? Maybe. I’m a guy building watches, not issuing legally binding proclamations.

But the intention is simple: one watch, one owner.

Why I Like It This Way

There are plenty of great watch brands making the same model thousands of times.

That’s just not what I’m trying to build.

JMR started because I liked making watches connected to people, places, memories, and stories. Keeping some pieces limited—or literally one of one—lets me keep experimenting without turning every good idea into an assembly line.

It also means the collection can keep changing.

You might visit the site one month and see something that isn’t there the next.

That’s intentional.

See One You Like?

My advice is pretty simple.

If it says Built to Order, you’ve probably got some time.

If it says Available Now, somebody can beat you to it.

And if it says 1 of 1...

Well, you already know how many there are.

Three initials. Three daughters. A lot of watches.

And occasionally, only one.
